It’s been a busy couple of years for Farnborough International.
Following a shiny new rebrand the company is also reaching the completion of a whole new exhibition, conference and events space. The purpose-built Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre will open in Spring 2018 and is set to add significantly to Farnborough’s offering as an events destination.
Alongside Farnborough International Airshow the site has hosted a number of large-scale exhibitions over the years and has already confirmed shows including National Pet Show, Screwfix Live, Kidz to Adultz South, Merchandise World and a new edition of the Homebuilding & Renovating Show from Centaur Media for the new venue.
Part of what makes Farnborough unique is its rich aviation history. The first powered flight took place at the site in 1908, piloted by Samuel Cody. Its heritage is reflected in the design of the new building. Developed by the architects Terance O’Rourke, the look and feel of the structure draws heavily on Farnborough’s association with aircraft testing and development in Farnborough’s famous wind tunnels, as well as reflecting the modern-day look of local buildings such as the neighbouring Aviator hotel.
Based on the same site as a private airport, Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre is keen to emphasise its security and safety capabilities. Security can be adjusted accordingly to suit the individual needs of each event. One of the first shows in the new facility, The Security and Policing Home Office event, will take full advantage of this with security stepped up around the show.
A challenge large venues often face is the relative weakness of the Wi-Fi networks when large numbers of delegates try to connect to the internet at the same time. To counter this, Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre has worked with tech supplier DB Systems to install a network that can cope with 10,000 delegates in its new facility.
With a lack of large venue space in London increasingly been seen as an issue by organisers, Farnborough’s offering, located around half an hour outside the city, may well be coming at just the right time.
