Southampton International Boat Show announces new dates after 2020 absence

by Joe Gallop

British Marine, the organiser of the Southampton International Boat Show, has announced the UK’s largest watersports festival will take place from 10-19 September 2021.

The 52nd edition of the Boat Show was due to take place in September this year, but it was cancelled by Southampton City Council just hours before the start as a result of Covid-19.

Less than a week later organisers asked health secretary Matt Hancock and culture secretary Oliver Dowden to review the decision, but the appeal was quashed, and the council’s director of public health Debbie Chase said she was “pleased” with the outcome.

Organisers and locals will now have to wait until next year for the physical-only event at Europe’s largest purpose-built marina, which saw 100,000 visitors in 2019, although it was expected only 20,000 were to attend this year’s event.

As well as on the water activities in the Solent, the Boat Show hosts over 450 marine brands and more than 600 boats along with live demonstrations and talks.

British Marine said they will continue to lobby the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and take guidance from larger events that are due to take place before next September, including Royal Ascot and the British Grand Prix.

Lesley Robinson, CEO of British Marine, said: “It is a great pleasure to announce that Southampton International Boat Show is back in 2021, the show is such a key event in the boating calendar and a real celebration to the end of season. British Marine is using our years of boat show experience to deliver the 52nd edition at full size and to welcome visitors back in style. We cannot wait to see you all in person again.”
