Excel London has appointed Sam Gibson as chief information officer, a newly created role on the venue’s executive team. The appointment comes as the venue carries out a multi-million-pound programme to improve its digital systems and connectivity.

Gibson has more than 20 years’ experience leading technology teams, most recently at Clarion Events, and has also worked in the property and construction sectors.

Jeremy Rees, CEO of Excel London, said: “He will also lead an ambitious new phase of our connectivity programme, which we look forward to announcing shortly.”

Gibson said: “The expectations of organisers, exhibitors and visitors are evolving rapidly, and technology has a key role to play in creating outstanding event experiences.”

New 5G and Wi-Fi networks

In June, Excel announced it was installing a new 5G network and Wi-Fi 7, due to arrive this autumn. The venue says the 5G network will let up to 200,000 mobile devices connect at once, four times its previous capacity.

Cisco named the connectivity upgrade as one of the main reasons for bringing Cisco Live back to Excel in February 2027, when the event will take over the venue’s full 125,000 square metres.
