AEV project manager qualifies as mental health first-aider

by Nicola Macdonald

Alden Arnold, the Association of Event Venue’s (AEV) project manager, alongside Raj Pragji, vice-chair of the Event Industry HR Working Group and HR Director at QEII Centre, has successfully completed the Mental Health First Aid England (MHFA) course.

The Event Industry HR Working Group (consisting of HR professionals from across event organisers, event suppliers and event/conference venues) has been exploring mental health awareness, building this into their short, medium and long term objectives. Pragji and Arnold will present their experiences to the HR working group at its next meeting where 16 members of the group have already attended the MHFA mental health champions course.

Arnold commented: “We learnt, through a refreshing combination of methods, practical everyday skills, including how to spot the signs of mental health issues and feel confident guiding people towards appropriate support.”

“But much more than that,” he continued, “the course has given me the tools to keep myself and my AEO, AEV and ESSA association colleagues healthy, encourage them to access support early, and stop preventable health issues arising through a supportive open culture about mental health.”

“I learnt that 60% of UK employees have experienced a mental health issue due to work, or where work was a contributing factor,” Arnold concluded, “and by raising awareness and promoting wellbeing in the workplace, we can make our jobs and working environments the source of mental wellbeing, rather than stress, anxiety or depression.”
