Paul Davis, CEO of Davis Events Ageny discusses experience-led stand design and six trends to look out for on the show floor.

Changing audience demographics, technological advancements and shifting expectations are having a huge impact on just about every professional industry, including ours. But what does this mean for exhibitors? And how do they need to evolve to capture the hearts and minds (and wallets) of visitors?

A good place to start is by revisiting the traditional exhibition stand. A simple branded backdrop, product display and bored looking sales rep is no longer enough to grab someone’s attention. Today’s exhibition halls are bustling, high-energy environments with hundreds of brands competing for eyeballs. Even then, footfall alone is no longer a sufficient metric for success — these days the Holy Grail is engagement.

Engagement comes from emotional connection. When visitors head to your stand, they don’t want to just see stuff, they want to feel something, and we want the same for them. Because feelings make memories. And memories equal brand recognition, positive sentiment, increased likelihood to buy and customer loyalty.

From now, Millennials and Gen Z supposedly make up around 75% of the workforce. These are your visitors. And they approach exhibitions with different expectations than previous generations. They want authenticity, purposeful interactions and brands that align with their values. With unlimited access to digital content, they also crave real-world experiences that cannot be replicated online (excellent news for you). Their interests and content preferences are shifting, demanding more immersive, interactive and personalised engagements.

The world of experiential

Enter experiential. To meet visitors’ expectations for ‘in real life’ experiences, stands need to deliver engaging, entertaining and – wow – interactions. It’s about creating environments rather than passive displays. It’s about using lighting, colour, sound and tactile elements to create atmosphere. Beyond aesthetics, think about ease of access to your expertise and customisation to deliver a deeper, even more meaningful connection.

It’s a brilliant opportunity to get creative, a bit carried away, but don’t forget your overall objective. Your messaging throughout must be clear, concise and memorable. Humans are naturally drawn to storytelling and brands that can convey their message through emotional, multi-sensory interactions have a far greater chance of leaving a lasting impression. Rather than simply presenting information, experiential stands allow visitors to feel the brand’s message. Engaging multiple senses —sight, sound, touch and even smell — enhances retention and creates an emotional resonance. These immersive experiences are also highly effective in educating attendees about products and services in a way that static presentations simply can’t achieve.

Beyond engagement, experiential activations offer significant benefits to exhibitors. They foster authentic connections, help you stand out in a competitive market and reach those younger demographics I mentioned earlier. Differentiation can lead to increased market share, greater audience advocacy and stronger brand loyalty.

Unlike traditional approaches, experiential engagements are also highly measurable, providing valuable data on visitor interaction and effectiveness (a much more useful metric than footfall). The return on investment is evident, as higher engagement often translates into stronger leads, conversions and long-term customer relationships.

Six experiential trends shaping the future of experiential exhibition stands

  • Sensory ignition: The importance of multi-sensory engagement cannot be overstated. Creating a journey that captivates all the senses ensures a more profound connection between you and your visitors.
  • The good old days: Nostalgia is playing a crucial role in experiential marketing with brands nodding to times gone by evoke sentimentality, emotion and familiarity.
  • Dare to be different times: Uniqueness, originality and authenticity are becoming the cornerstones of impactful brand activations as audiences increasingly seek out experiences that stand apart from the mainstream.
  • Total immersion: We’ve seen a shift toward immersive brand environments where exhibition spaces are designed to reflect a company’s identity holistically. From custom-built structures to interactive digital elements, exhibitors are prioritising fully immersive spaces that transport visitors into the brand’s world.
  • Techno techno: Technology integration is rapidly becoming an expectation. Gamification, AI and AR are enhancing exhibition stands by making interactions more engaging, personalised and fun.
  • Personalisation: Technology also (usefully) allows for real-time data collection and visitor insights, providing you with a clearer understanding of attendee preferences and behaviours. With that data, you can further segment your audience to deliver more personalised experiences that are more relevant and impactful.

We believe the transformation of exhibitions into experiential hubs is no longer a trend — it is an industry shift that is here to stay, and not just at consumer events, but trade shows, too – anywhere you want to connect with people and influence behavioural change, experiential gets results.

Those exhibitors who choose not to adapt risk being left behind in an increasingly experience-driven landscape. By focusing on storytelling, sensory engagement and personalised interactions, you can create stands that not only draw in visitors but also leave them with a lasting emotional imprint – one that will have a direct impact on your bottom line.
