RX, global exhibition organisers, and BYP (Black Young Professionals) celebrate their successful partnership ahead of International Mentoring Day on 17th January by reflecting on success stories. People will celebrate International Mentoring Day as part of National Mentoring Month. This month-long celebration highlights the importance of mentoring, encourages active participation in mentoring programs and raises awareness about the value of mentorship.
BYP, a business community devoted to advancing the career of black professionals, embodies the principles celebrated on International Mentoring Day. Great Britain athlete and Economics graduate Kike Oniwinde created the BYP network in 2016. BYP network aims to connect black professionals and students globally for role model visibility, career opportunities and business support.
Today, BYP network facilitates networking, mentoring and employment for over 150,000 community members in 20 countries. Its members include a full range of experience levels.
RX and BYP have built a symbiotic relationship since forming their partnership. RX uses its membership in the BYP network to promote events and open job positions directly on the BYP website. Additionally, RX now joins a community of mentors and allies who engage. This enables students and professionals to contact RX for guidance and advice.
Through their partnership, RX and BYP have exemplified the power of mentorship by connecting experienced professionals with those seeking guidance. As National Mentoring Month continues, their efforts help raise awareness of the vital role mentorship plays in creating inclusive and supportive workplaces.
One such experienced professional, Kathryn McCarthy, RX UK marketing director, said she was motivated to become a mentor by the chance to help others: ‘I have mentored in the past and the service of giving to others is a positive force for good and rewarding on a personal level. For me, BYP Network is a great organisation and if I can help others overcome barriers and accelerate their careers, it’s a tangible way of contributing to greater diversity and success in the workplace’.
McCarthy matched with BYP Network mentee Esther Solomon-Turay, book publisher and founder of Authentic Worth. Solomon-Turay was looking to advance her skill set and meet like-minded business owners and entrepreneurs in her creative field. Solomon-Turay explained: ‘I wanted to learn from other skilled business owners who are passionate about what they do, whilst fulfilling purpose. We had our first meeting in April 2024 virtually. Although we are from two different business backgrounds, Kathryn was able to understand the vision and purpose of Authentic Worth and aligned me with the right institutions that can support the progress of the business.’
Solomon-Turay’s story, and motivation behind Authentic Worth, struck McCarthy. McCarthy expressed: ‘Esther is a natural storyteller, and her wisdom, focus and dedication is inspiring. Over the course of six months, we have had focused conversations to understand her goals and I have been able to share my experience and make suggestions to help her on her journey. She is an absolute pleasure to spend time with, has great humanity, warmth, and humour, and is truly authentic to her values.’
McCarthy’s guidance directly paved the way for Solomon-Turay to secure a place on the panel at the London Book Fair, further demonstrating the power of mentorship to open new doors.
Overall, Solomon Turay said: ‘I have learned the importance of taking the time to focus on the strengths of the business and delegating and outsourcing tasks and other projects to those who are capable of adding further value’.
The partnership between RX and BYP continues to thrive highlighted by success stories like those between McCarthy and Solomon-Turay. It has created valuable opportunities for mentorship and career development. Both organisations remain committed to fostering diversity and inclusion, providing essential support for black professionals worldwide.
As International Mentoring Day approaches, RX and BYP celebrate the power of mentorship in shaping future leaders. With ongoing efforts to empower individuals and businesses alike, their collaboration is making a lasting impact on workplace culture and professional growth.
