ASIA – More than 100 international exhibitors have been denied permission to take part in the forthcoming 11th Delhi Auto Expo due to space limitations at Pragati Maidan, according to local reports.

The organisers of the biennial show restricted the number of people present inside the venue each day to 100,000 including 30,000 people on the exhibitors’ side.

The move means the show will now present 1,500 participants from 24 countries including the US, China, Thailand and Turkey.

“Over 100 firms have been denied permissions on two criteria— late entry and past history of participation,” said Auto Expo 2012 steering committee chairman Rajive Kaul. Sixty companies were overseas exhibitors.

“Pragati Maidan is going to be a difficult venue for expanding the show in future,” added Kaul. “We are examining at present how to address this issue. It is a big question and a big decision has to be made on whether we will stay here or relocate to a new place.”

The organiser earlier explored the possibility of shifting the event to Greater Noida, a plan scuppered by poor regional travel and connectivity. However Kaul confirmed the show will not move out of the National Capital Region.

Total area at this year’s Delhi Auto Expo has dropped to 115,000sqm from 125,000sqm.

Messe Frankfurt, the company behind German exhibition Light and Building, is launching a new lighting trade show in India.
