On 28 February, Iran launched retaliatory strikes towards Israel, US bases and regional partners. Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the UAE have all been targeted. In a matter of days, the Gulf states’ status as “the Switzerland of the Middle East” has been seriously undermined.

As this is covering what is clearly a fast-moving situation, I want to balance my comments with some optimism. Yes, the reputational damage will be significant, but recovery is absolutely possible, and the speed of that recovery will be shaped by what the industry does next. The Gulf states have world-class venues, strong government support and a genuine commitment to tourism. If organisers, venues, and national tourism and travel departments work together with consistent messaging and genuine reassurance, the road back will be shorter than history might suggest. This is a moment for the industry to pull together, not step back.
