The world’s largest privately owned events group, Clarion Events has announced, 6 October, it is to be acquired by Informa, the leading international B2B live events group, in a £2.24bn deal.
The acquisition of the London-based organiser brings over 100 B2B live event brands into the Informa group, including the world’s largest consumer electronics show, IFA Berlin and the Defence & Security Equipment International held at London’s ExCel.
The deal, city analysts say, is to be funded through proceeds from a £940m equity placement, in partnership with Retailbook.
Clarion said the move will also create new opportunities to accelerate growth across the portfolio, expand into priority markets, further develop data and digital capabilities, and enhance the value of the industries that both organisations serve.
Clarion also noted that becoming part of a larger global organisation would provide its brands with access to increased scale, investment, capabilities and international reach.
Lisa Hannant, Clarion Events CEO, said the deal marked an important new chapter for the business. “We have built a portfolio of market-leading brands, established strong positions in attractive markets and created a culture that is recognised across our industry.
“Informa’s decision to invest in Clarion is a recognition of the quality of our business, our brands and our people. This is a moment to recognise the outstanding contribution of our teams. Their passion, expertise and commitment have helped build the successful business that Informa is investing in today.
“Together, we see significant opportunities to accelerate growth, expand our reach and continue investing in the products, services and experiences that create value for our customers and communities around the world.
“We are grateful to Blackstone for their support and stewardship over the years, helping us invest in our people, our brands and our long-term growth.”
Stephen A. Carter, Informa Group CEO, added: “Clarion is home to world-class B2B brands and talent. We share the same focus on serving major, specialist and international markets and delivering impact and value to our customers and partners. We’re excited to bring Clarion’s brands and teams into the Informa group and to further grow and expand our leading international B2B Live Events business.”
Lionel Assant, global co-CIO, Blackstone, commented: “Since our original investment in Clarion Events in 2017, our ambition has been to build a truly global leader in events and exhibitions. Together with the outstanding Clarion management team led by Lisa Hannant, we are proud to have created a platform with significant scale, breadth, and international reach. As demand for global events continues to grow, we believe Informa is the ideal partner for Clarion’s next chapter, combining global reach, deep industry expertise and a shared focus on delivering exceptional experiences for customers.”
Clarion was keen to assure that, for customers, exhibitors, sponsors, partners and suppliers, its business will continue as usual.
The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals and closing conditions. Goldman Sachs International acted as Sole Financial Adviser to Clarion Events
Informa also laid out plans on 6 October to separate its academic markets arm, which sits under the Taylor & Francis brand. It said the move came as the division was approaching $1bn in revenue and growing at four per cent annually.
“We believe it will now benefit from greater flexibility and freedom through the next phase of its development, as Informa further expands the depth and reach of its B2B portfolio,” said Carter.
The group has launched a formal process reviewing all options for separation and is set to announce the outcome alongside its 2026 full-year results.
