Scotland’s busiest railway station, Glasgow Central, has sustained major damage after it was engulfed in flames on Sunday afternoon. The blaze reportedly began at a vape shop on Union Street.
The B-listed Victorian building in which the fire started collapsed several hours later. However, thus far no significant damage to the station itself has so far been reported.
The fire has since been extinguished as firefighters worked through the night to put out the blaze. However, Network Rail have reported that the station will remain closed today and possibly tomorrow (9 March) also. No injuries have been reported so far.
Glasgow Convention Bureau’s (untimely) launch of new initiative
The unfortunate news comes just days after Glasgow Convention Bureau launched a new initiative to help conference organisers and delegates deliver “social and environmental impact” when meeting in the city. At the Scottish Community Tourism Conference on 6 March, Glasgow’s CVB launched a “Community and Social Enterprise Map” to help delegates identify local organisations, venues and suppliers whose income directly supports community initiatives.
Aileen Crawford, head of tourism and conventions at Glasgow Convention Bureau, said: “The Scottish Community Tourism Conference is the ideal place to launch the In Glasgow, Meetings Mean More initiative.
“As the first urban location to host a Community Tourism conference, the Glasgow Convention Bureau were keen to embrace the ethos of community tourism by guiding delegates to spend with local enterprises that have a mission to do good in their community.”
