Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre has long been recognised for its ties to aerospace, with the Farnborough International Airshow firmly positioning the venue on the global stage. In recent years, however, it has also become a significant destination for the automotive sector. Increasingly, organisers are turning to Farnborough for launches, showcases and technical demonstrations, drawn by its scale, flexibility and operational expertise.

A site designed for large-scale automotive activity
The venue’s physical attributes play a major role in this shift. Farnborough offers pillarless halls with eight-metre height clearance, large vehicle access doors and 100,000m² of outdoor space suitable for live demonstrations or static displays. The two primary halls, Hall 1 at 12,332m² and Hall 5 at 3,150m², provide clear-span, unbranded space that can support everything from multi-vehicle showcases to intricate set builds. Private on-site roads further enhance the offer by enabling test drives within a secure environment. Sarah Marshall, venue director at Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre said: “By combining extensive indoor and outdoor facilities with advanced technical capabilities and dedicated operational support, our venue empowers automotive events to deliver immersive, high-impact experiences.”

One of Farnborough’s defining strengths is its adaptability. The venue’s secure, fully private site makes it well suited to confidential product launches, prototype testing or early-stage showcases. As Marshall notes: “These features position Farnborough as a versatile venue beyond aerospace, appealing to sectors such as automotive and advanced manufacturing. Events like Southern Manufacturing & Electronics and The British Motor Show demonstrate our capability to support vehicle displays, test drives and complex technical builds, proving we can handle both scale and detail.”
This adaptability extends to full creative transformations. As Marshall adds: “Our combination of scale, flexibility and operational excellence sets us apart. Hall 1 enables dramatic product reveals for multi-vehicle launches or concept cars. Our teams can transform an empty space into an immersive brand environment, and our technology integration capabilities elevate even the most ambitious reveals.”

Operational capability proven through high-demand events
The venue’s track record reinforces its reputation for handling complex, large-scale events. The 2024 Farnborough International Airshow, for example, was its most ambitious yet, hosting 1,427 exhibitors, 100,358 visitors and 103 aircraft across both static and flying displays. Managing heavy aircraft, advanced exhibits and delegations from numerous countries demonstrated the venue’s capacity to support significant logistical and operational demands.
Shortly afterwards, Farnborough delivered the International Armoured Vehicle Show, which required the movement and positioning of armoured vehicles weighing up to 40 tonnes. As Marshall explained: “Several vehicles were tracked, so steel plates strong enough to support them were laid and repositioned as the tanks moved into place. It required precise coordination to ensure safety and efficiency, demonstrating our ability to manage complex, heavy-duty installations.”

The venue also delivered high-impact consumer and corporate experiences, such as Whitbread’s staff celebration for 3,000 guests. This event transformed the entirety of Hall 1, one side featuring fairground rides and catering trucks, the other recreating a full live-music environment with tiered seating, professional lighting, a full stage and pit area.
As Marshall said: “The scale and creativity of this setup highlighted both the versatility of our space and the expertise of our technical and events teams.”

As the automotive sector increasingly blends physical engineering with digital engagement, Farnborough has expanded its ability to host VR-driven and hybrid experiences. Events now frequently incorporate vehicle configurators, immersive presentation formats and AR-enabled test-drive simulations. As Marshall notes: “Our blank-canvas halls and infrastructure allow brands to blend physical products with digital storytelling and visualisation, creating immersive experiences that resonate with today’s audiences.”
Continued investment in infrastructure and sustainability
Looking ahead, Farnborough is continuing to develop its site in preparation for future demand. Recent investments include dedicated on-site film and TV production studios and a £1m installation of solar panels on Hall 1, supporting both innovation and sustainability goals. Marshall said: “As one of the only venue-and-organiser organisations in the UK events industry, we are proud to support clients in bringing their visions to life. We will continue to develop our expert team and nurture our growing portfolio of independent event clients. Over the coming years, we will keep investing in our site to deliver more innovative, sustainable and memorable events, so watch this space.”
As automotive, engineering and advanced manufacturing sectors continue to evolve, Farnborough’s combination of scale, privacy, technical capability and operational expertise places it in a strong position to support increasingly complex event requirements. Its ability to host everything from heavy-duty demonstrations to highly produced brand experiences, alongside its growing hybrid and digital offering, confirms its role as a venue equipped to meet the industry’s future needs.
