The Women in Exhibitions (WIE) first webinar with EN discussed key issues affecting women in the exhibition industry, 3 June.
The live talk featured female leaders including; Oana Cipca, founder of WIE and business development manager, MECC Maastricht, Soraya Gadelrab, portfolio director, Montgomery Events, Claire Washington-Smith, founder, Shinesmith, Victoria James, event director, Hyve Group, Kirstin Deutelmoser, director, Messe Düsseldorf GmbH, and Juliane Jahnke, owner, Agendum Schmitt & Jaehnke Partners.
The debate focussed on the lack of women attaining C-Level roles in the exhibition industry and what are the obstacles keeping women from many of the top spots?
Cipca explained: “Women in the exhibition industry are perfectly welcome at the C- level table and they only need to take a seat. Women need to learn to be brave and take control over their career paths and start practicing self promotion. My message to other women is not to be afraid to show your vulnerability rather than seeing it as a failure. WIE is here to help and you only have to ask.”
The WIE also launched a new series of training programmes called Thinkshop to help develop women’s careers during the live debate. Other topics included a discussion about how the industry has responded to the effects the Covid-19 pandemic, and what exhibitions could look like when they return.
Cipca added: “Today’s session online about the Women in Exhibitions has been a great opportunity to present our vision to the community and talk to a large audience our plans for the future. It has been inspirational to be involved in a webinar with other professional women representing important regions of the exhibitions industry like Germany, the Middle East, the UK and the Netherlands.”
