Reed Business Information (RBI) has withdrawn from the construction industry with the cancellation of its 2011 Site Equipment Demonstration as well as a corresponding magazine and website.
In an open letter published on the show’s website, RBI MD Robert Brighouse says the cancellation is due to the impact of the recession. However, there are no plans for further editions of the show.
“The recession in construction has continued to affect suppliers’ marketing budgets,” wrote RBI MD Robert Brighouse in an open letter on the show’s website, “and despite the hard work of the sales team and goodwill from the market, the current level of commitment to next year’s show is not what we had hoped and our feeling is the show is unlikely to meet our expectations. We therefore feel that we have no alternative but to cancel the show,” he continued.
This would have been the 45th edition of the show, which moved to Rockingham in Corby in 2006.
According to Robert Aplin, director of end-user construction show Executive Hire Show, the move to Rockingham had as much to do with the show’s downfall as the recession.
“With a location too far removed from the main motorway links, and faced with massive traffic delays in that first year, SED never got on track at Rockingham. Staggeringly, SED made a 15-year commitment to Rockingham, and apparently backed that up with an investment in infrastructure of many millions of pounds,” he said, adding that exhibitors and visitors never quite got over the delays of the first year in Rockingham, and numbers had dwindled ever since.
The RBI monthly magazine Site Equipment Manager and website SED365.co.uk, which supported the show, have also been closed.
Meanwhile, UBM expanded its Built Environment portfolio with the acquisition of UK sales leads business Lead In Research.
