RASE sires Royal Show successors

The Royal Agricultural Society of England has launched a series of exhibitions to take the place of The Royal Show.

The society closed Britain’s most prestigious annual farming event this year because of falling visitor numbers. It is replacing the 160-year-old event with a range of exhibitions created from the most popular elements of show.

“Over the next three to four years we will be rolling out a series of events that take their inspiration from the very best and popular elements of the Royal Show,” says RASE chief executive Brian Warren. “We are actively investigating a number of key opportunities across the plethora of our interests which include livestock, education and a science showcase to name but a few.” 

The first of these, AgriLIVE Smithfield, takes place at Stoneleigh Park on 11-12 December. Co-organised with the Royal Smithfield Club, the technically-focused business event aims to meet the needs of the red meat industry, bringing together producers, processors and retailers to better understand their supply chain. Features will include workshops, debates and the traditional Smithfield primestock classes and auction. The event will feature over 100 exhibitors and aims to attract 10,000 visitors.

The Festival of the Horse makes its debut at Stoneleigh Park on 9-11 July 2010. Jointly-organised with E3, the outdoor show will feature three individually themed days, competitions and entertainment as well as the Royal Show showing classes. The three-day show is expected to attract 50,000 equestrian enthusiasts seeking products and information from the equine industry from 200 exhibitors.

Meanwhile, the RASE has just taken a 20 per cent share in The Edible Garden Show, which has been launched by a consortium of investors including Brian Wiseman and Paul Smith of PR agency Paul Smith Associates.

RASE marketing director Denis Chamberlain says: “The smallholding area of the Royal Show was very popular and we were considering how to keep this going, when we were approached by Edible Garden. Partnering with them is an appropriate and logical step for us.”

Endorsed by the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners, the event will be promoted through the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and The People newspapers. The show is hoping to attract 100 -140 exhibitors and 15,000 visitors.
