One Day at Christmas returns

by Louisa Daley

One Day at Christmas (ODAC), Mash Media’s annual charitable event for the elderly and those who might otherwise be alone over the festive period, will take place at ExCeL London on 14 December.

With more than two million people in England over the age of 75 living alone, and more than a million older people say they go for over a month without speaking to a friend, neighbour or family member, Christmas can often be an isolating holiday.

The event aims to make Christmas a joyful season for elderly and lonely people. This year’s event is expected to welcome 300 people and 50 volunteers. Attendees can expect a Christmas lunch, bingo, fun activities, music, dancing and more.

Commenting on the event, Simon Mills, chief commercial officer, ExCeL London, said: “Christmas is traditionally a time for reconnecting with friends and loved ones, but that sentiment remains even more important after the difficult times we’ve all faced. ExCeL has a number of long-standing charity partners, so we didn’t hesitate to lend our support to another good cause and the One Day at Christmas event. We are delighted to be involved and looking forward to spreading some much-needed festive cheer.”

Julian Agostini, managing director at Mash Media and creator of the event, added: “I’m thrilled to be able to run One Day at Christmas once again this year. We are so thankful to ExCeL for helping us to host this event and to all the supporters in our great industry, who get involved.

“It feels especially important this year as the last 20 months has been particularly difficult for the lonely and vulnerable. This is something small in the grand scheme of things but it’s a special day that brings a bit of joy and the magic of Christmas to some people who need it the most.”
