In-person events return to UK shores with International Confex, 1-2 September , ExCeL London. The show serves as the meeting point for the events industry and looks to set the bar for the return of live events in 2021.
To find out what the key topics on-site will be, come 1 September , we spoke to two members of the International Confex advisory board: Mike Seaman, ceo, Raccoon Events; and Jasmin Myton, event and marketing manager, Wowcher.
Back to reality
Returning to the live format in the wake of the pandemic means Covid-19 will dominate the conversation for many events professionals. We asked our advisory board members which topics they would be discussing on the show floor.
MS: “Covid is the biggest issue facing us today and sustainability is the biggest issue facing us tomorrow. We need to enact meaningful change regarding our environmental impact and we need to do it immediately”
JM: “Personally, the main theme/takeaway will be tips on reengagement and how to encourage and reconnect customers back to in person events. Another key focus will be fulfilment and exceeding expectations for our clients and customers moving forward and how to navigate the events world safely, post covid.”
Live and in colour
With the events industry having been locked inside for the past 18 months, it’s fair to say many of us have become accustomed to the digital format. We asked about the desire to return to a face-to-face event.
MS: “Human to human contact is the most powerful form of engagement. After an enforced absence, our audiences are hungrier than ever to get together and to interact in a more meaningful and multi-sensory way. Digital has its place and remote working and Zoom calls are great; but nothing beats live!”
JM: “It’s [the live format] essential. It’s such a big part of events and adds an element of community and togetherness that virtual just simply cannot offer. While virtual has proved amazing during such unprecedented times, now we have the option of connecting with others, in the same room. An in-person event is a touchpoint that simply cannot be replicated to the same standard with tech alone.”
