The fourth edition of ESP Recruitment’s apprentice-style competition for final year event management students, The Eventice, has crowned three winners.
The event took place on 10-12 February at this year’s Event Production Show at Earls Court 2 in London and saw 15 finalists compete.
This year, the competition challenged the students to some of the toughest challenges yet. Thrown in at the deep end on day one, with a three-hour task at London’s first urban winery, London Cru, the students were asked to create a new wine aimed at young professionals.
They were tasked with creating the brand, designing the label, creating a two-minute video to promote the wine and even blend the wine. The students had to present their ideas and vision to Gavin Monery, winemaker at London Cru who tasted their wine and chose a winner.
“We were really impressed by the enthusiasm of the Eventice students,” said Monery. “It was really difficult to pick a winner from the two groups, but one group slightly took the edge. Creating your own wine right down to the contents of the bottle is a great team-building exercise and something we do for our corporate clients at London Cru. It’s always a really fun day for everyone, and we were delighted we could introduce some of the events managers of the future to our space.”
With two jobs on offer to the winners initially from Bluehat and George P Johnson (GPJ), day two of the competition was tough, with tasks lasting from 8am to 8pm and testing their ability to project manage, negotiate, time manage, create a brand, create a pitch for an event and present their ideas to Kevin Jackson, vice president of sales and marketing at GPJ.
The 15 finalists were narrowed down to five at the Event Production Awards on 11 February and, on day three, they had interviews with their potential new employers and presented for 10 minutes in front of some of the event industry’s biggest players including Mash Media’s MD Julian Agostini.
“The candidates were outstanding, I would definitely have offered two of the eventual winners a position at Mash Media, had they not been successful. The industry, as a whole, should take note of this initiative as it demonstrates the talent that we are potentially missing every year.”
ESP Recruitment partnered with Mash Media for the competition.
GPJ offered Elena Clowes from University of Hertfordshire a job and Bluehat were so impressed that the firm decided to offer two of the students a job, Charlotte Jarman and Holly Glover, both from Leeds Metropolitan University.
“Every year I am always in awe at the high calibre of students that take part in the Eventice,” said ESP Recruitment director and creator of the Eventice competition, Liz Sinclair.
“These are our rising stars of the future and the industry often misses out on employing these fresh graduates straight from university. It can be very tough for graduates to secure a job and I hope this competition shows the future of our industry is rosy.”
