Editor’s Letter: Back with a Bang

The winter issue of EN is out now.

Editorial director Martin Fullard:

I cannot recall a time that has been so busy with events. Since International Confex opened its doors on 1 September, it feels as if the exhibitions machine has been running at full chat: normal never felt so good. Then, of course, just two weeks out from Christmas we receive word from Downing Street that ‘Plan B’ is to be introduced in an effort to curb the spread of the virus once more.

What to do; cancel all the features and moan, or stick with what we have and show off the best of the industry?
It was an easy choice: we’re sticking with things because there is so much to be proud of.
After 18 months with effectively no income, the exhibition and trade show industry was back with a bang at the end of summer and there have been some truly wonderful shows taking place up and down the land, and this issue of EN is a celebration of that.

We begin with our cover story, where we meet Carrie Lee, marketing director for RX Global’s World Travel Market London. The travel industry has been kicked around as much as our own sector, so the two coming together at ExCeL London in November was something that simply couldn’t be missed.

We speak to Media 10 founder Lee Newton and marketing director Rob Nathan about how organisers need to be thinking outside the box when it comes to making money from digital products while on the show floor at the Ideal Home Christmas show.  Decorex event director Sam Fisher explains how being able to touch and feel products is essential in the luxury interiors market.

We also explore sustainability, diversity, and how to launch a trade show.

On to other matters, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate EN guest editor Phil Soar on his Outstanding Contribution of the Year award at the AEO centenary awards on 10 December: we look at his acheivements in more detail. .Finally, I’d like to welcome Emily Wallin to the EN team, who has joined us as deputy editor. You’ll be seeing more and more of her in the coming months.

Enjoy the issue.
