Stephen Richards has announced his departure from The NEC as venue sales director.
He said that family reasons helped prompt his leaving following nearly two and a half years at the Midlands venue.
Richards will leave his post at the end of July.
“It is with real regret that I am leaving The NEC (and the NEC Group as a whole) on the brink of new and exciting times. New ownership and the investment that will bring, plus the opening of Resorts World, will be realgame changers for the venue,” Richards told EN.
“However, family comes first, and it is has been difficult living where I do on the south coast and being away every week at the venue.”
Richards said he will be returning to the role of organiser at The NEC in the shape of the January Furniture Show – an event he helped launch 20 years ago.
“I would like to think I leave the account management and sales teams in a better and more confident place than when I arrived and our customers well looked after,” Richards added.
The former UBM event director joined The NEC in 2011, replacing Richard Pegler who resigned from The NEC post in order to join event services supplier and marketing consultancy Mayridge.
Richards began his career at Exclusively Exhibitions across a host of trade exhibitions. His CV includes stints at Waypoint Exhibitions, Reed Exhibitions and Blenheim.
As group director of Blenheim, he oversaw all the organiser’s UK events including Confex, IFSEC and Franchise. Richards was also responsible for the launch of The Furniture Show and The National Venue Show in Birmingham.
