Career and skills trade exhibition SkillsCymru saw Matthew Cassells crowned as Master Fitter Champion 2010 in a show feature that was the culmination of six months of competition.
The skills and training exhibition was attended by over 10,000 visitors between 16 and 18 September at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Six finalists in the Master Fitter contest had to repair and replace a windscreen against the clock, with Cassells, from Nationwide Windscreen Services in Lancashire, recording the quickest time.
He will represent the UK on 30 September at the 2010 International Master Fitter Championships, as part of the Glasstec International Trade Fair, in Dusseldorf. Competitors from up to 15 nations are expected to take part.
“This really is a dream come to true,” said Cassells. “I’ve been in this business for 19 years and I always try to better myself. Representing the UK hasn’t sunk in yet, but I feel confident going to Germany.”
Deputy minister for Science, Innovation and Skills, Lesley Griffiths, added: “Automotive glazing is now a technology in its own right. All the finalists this year have reached a level of excellence that will act as an inspiration to us all. They all had a steadfast commitment to achieving excellence through training, which is what our exhibition is all about.”
