Scottish organiser QD Events has postponed its annual Fishing Expo but stressed plans to return in 2012 with a bigger, better event.
The show was due to be held at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) from 24 to 26 March. The decision comes after the launch of a rival fishing show in Aberdeen from 24 to 25 June. The Scottish Skipper Expo will be run by Mara Media, owners of the Irish Skipper publication and the Irish Skipper Expo.
QD Events MD Fran McIntyre attributed its decision to industry demand for one, high-profile event serving the whole of the industry.
“This was a very difficult decision to make and one that involved prioritising the best interests of the industry,” McIntyre said. “We strongly believe there should be a Fishing Expo in Scotland which pulls together the best of UK and European suppliers for our skippers and boat owners across the UK.”
The Fishing Expo will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2012. McIntyre said QD Events will bring together all exhibitors and visitors who have supported the show over the years on 25 March at the SECC to reveal plans for next year.
The 2010 Fishing Expo attracted 2,000 visitors and just over 100 exhibitors. Magazine partner IntraFish, publisher of Fishing News and Fishing News International, will continue to support the event moving forward.
In a statement, Fishing Expo exhibitor Anderson Marine welcomed the news.
“This demonstrates common sense and empathy on the part of QD Events. We’re looking forward to working with them to plan and build a bigger and better event in 2012,” MD Chris Anderson said.
“This has my full backing and that of many of my industry colleagues,” David Wood of Northern Oils added. “I share the commitment of QD Events to bringing the show back as a major business and social occasion for the industry and believe that in 2012 it will be an event which can bring delegates from across Europe and one which we can be proud of in the UK.”
