This year’s World Travel Market (WTM) at Excel London will be opened by UK Olympics Minister Jeremy Hunt.
The travel industry exhibition is organised by Reed Travel Exhibitions and runs from 7 to 10 November. In line with the London Olympics, this year’s event will have a strong sports tourism theme and focus on the economic and cultural benefits surrounding the 2012 games in several sessions.
Hunt, the MP for South West Surrey and Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport, will discuss the UK Government’s tourism plans for the Olympics during WTM’s opening ceremony and how it will create a legacy for not just London but the whole of the UK.
Tourism contributes £115bn each year to the UK economy, with the UK Government believing it has the potential to be one of the fastest growing sectors in the years ahead. Hunt will be joined a high-profile sporting guest who has not yet been revealed.
“The minister’s involvement in WTM demonstrates both the role travel and tourism will play in the success of the games and the importance of WTM to the sector,” Reed Travel Exhibitions’ WTM chairman Fiona Jeffery said.
More broadly, the exhibition will feature a dedicated Sports Tourism programme, sponsored by eurosport, which includes a panel hosted by former Olympic middle and long-distance runner David Moorcroft, and sessions on UK and international initiatives and issues.
Other additions to this year’s WTM include an expanded technology section and a high-profile airline speakers’ programme including senior executives British Airways, Air China, IATA and Sky Team.
