Mara Media show tackles south west commercial fishing sector

by EN

Irish-based exhibition organiser Mara Media will launch an edition of its commercial fishing expo in Bristol in 2013.

The decision follows the successful debut of its Skipper Expo International in Aberdeen in 2011, which returned to the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre in June and attracted 2,500 visitors. The third edition takes place from 10 to 11 May 2013.

“We have been adding to our show portfolio over the past four years,” Mara Media MD Hugh Bonner told EN. Mara Media produces The Skipper magazine title for the
commercial fishing sector.

The new south west Skipper Expo International is aimed at both British and Welsh fishing communities. Mara is starting small at the Marriott Hotel in Bristol on 24 and 25 October 2013 with 1,000sqm, a similar size and configuration to its first Skipper Expo in Galway nine years ago. The company also runs the Angling Show in Dublin every February.

“Last year, we ran our first British show in Aberdeen, which prompted the industry in the south west to ask us do something for them,” Bonner explained. “It is a small industry and everyone knows everyone. The industry will mark this weekend in the diary and will expect to do business and then some socialising, which is why we chose to run our event at a hotel.”

Mara Media is also looking for opportunities outside the fishing sector and hopes to shore up its position as both an Irish and British exhibition organiser by launching other niche market events.

In the meantime, the company announced it will move its annual Irish Cycling Show from RDS in Dublin to the City West Hotel next year. The trade and consumer show runs from 8 to 10 March 2013, and commences with a trade-only day.

“The Irish marketplace is very tough at the moment, particularly for small businesses,” Bonner added. “This year, we are consolidating our portfolio to ensure we have a spread of exhibitions throughout the year.

“We opted to put together a national programme together to get into exhibitions, then do more shows in Britain.”
